A sheet of MDF or plywood and a gallon of blackboard paint...under $35 at Home Depot or Lowes.
If you want slate...special order item from a stoneyard...and it's really expensive.
In the paint section. They make paint that turns into chalkboard surface when dry.
To make a chalkboard you paint a flat surface with some black stuff...i forget what its called, but ask your home depot paint guy...they will have it.
Old fashion slate is heavy and expensive I would use sanded smooth pyl wood and chalkboard paint.
