What is the best kind of paint to use in restoring a guitar?

Question:I'm wanting to restore a guitar I have. What kind of paint is best to use, plus the amount of coats to put on it?

Answers:
If you want to RESTORE the guitar, you need to provide the brand, model, and year since this will determine what was on it in the first place... very important for restoration.

If all you want to do is paint it, DON'T DO IT unless you have access to good equipment and know how to disassemble and reassemble it correctly.

I WOULD SAY SPRAY PAINT
KRYLON
AND A RAY OF COLORS TO CHOOSE FROM
BEST
This depends on the sort of guitar. If it's acoustical (classical, 12-string traditional folk etc.) you DON'T paint it at all; any heavy covering will alter the mass & resilience of the box & make a dog's copulation of the tone. It might even produce uneven resonance where one note or set of notes is uncontrollably louder than the rest.

If it's an electric rock or pop guitar, go ahead & paint it - any sort of paint that will stick on - it won't matter. Take the tuning head off to paint, but it doesn't matter about putting it back - no pop/rock fan notices when you're in tune, only the synthesised bass beat which you're not responsible for.
