lol I really dont think its important at all. If ours matched, we'd have brown drapes or white carpet! No thanks, lol. I think this fashion norm is more for the time when "carpet" referred to an area rug.
I think the furniture and the carpet should compliment eachother, and the drapes should match or compliment the furniture. I always go with a neutral color of carpeting in case I want to get new furniture.

Go with what makes you feel good - express yourself through your decorating at home as much and as freely as you do your taste in clothes, jewelry, shoes, cars, makeup, music, etc.

No. My carpet is beige, and my drapes are cream.The color scheme is brown and blue is th a touch of red. It's the whole picture that has to blend well. Sometimes matching the drapes and curtains is the way to go.
