Organizing a Yard Sale?

Question:I was gathering some items for a yard sale. Someone told me that you might have to buy some type of permit to have a yard sale. Does anyone know about this? If anyone from Alabama happens to read this, you might be able to give me more specific details if it is state mandated, however, I would appreciate answers from all over. Thanks

Answers:
Most states and or counties require a permit only if you hold more than 1 yard sale every three months, call your city or county to make sure. But that is almost standard. Then make sure you place easy to read signs out on main road entrances, they should be able to read them from a good distance while driving. Some news papers give out a free yard sale kit with signs if you run an add. Most yard sale ads are yery cheap, but VERY important to do, then if you do not have enough stuff get stuff that atract in an ad, like Disney collectables, NASCAR (dale jr sells best) and antique looking stuff. I made 1000 a weekend for two years holding yard sales. Check out www.bradshawWholesale.com

there are no state laws regarding yard sales in Alabama. however, certain cities require you purchase a permit to conduct a yard sale that must be displayed (first place I ever saw this was in AL). Call your city hall to ask. The one Alabama city that had a permit requirement was bordered by another city that had no such req't. Plus, some neighborhoods have covenents that restrict when and how you can do it. Check your by-laws.
That would be a local ordinance. My town allows you to have 4 a year without a permit.

If you are in the city, call city hall. If you live in the county, you should be good.

When you place your ad in the local paper, they can advise you as to if a permit is required.
I'm not sure about the laws there but I do have some good ideas for garage sales. We've had a lot of them that were very successful. 1st. call your local radio station and ask them to advertise for you, if you are willing to offer 10 or 15% of earnings to a specific local charity they will advertise for free! The charity thing has always brought us good crowds. Churches my be trying to earn money for the kids to go to camp this summer this is the perfect time for that! Ask neighbors if they want to put stuff in as well. Look for sales on cans of soda and bottled water, stock up and fill up an ice chest or clean garbage can for ice cold drinks you should be able to make a good profit there. Also adv. in the penny saver or local cheep paper, believe it or not there are people that plan a day of this based on the lists. Try through in Thursday if you can, usually surprising good turnouts are on Wed. and Thu.
