How can I tell if my deck is covered in a solid stain or actual Paint?

Question:It is peeling in parts so I though it would be paint, but a friend said it was solid stain... I dunno?

Answers:
Stain penetrates the wood grain, paint lays on top.
A solid color stain is heavier but will pentrate.
