How much would materials cost to replace the ceiling of a 2200 sq. foot house? could I do it myself?

Question:I have no experience but am a pretty handy guy. Nothing fancy just basic ceiling.

Answers:
Since your area is about 2000sq/ft and a 4x8 sheet has an area of 32sq/ft, you'd need around 65 sheets. Around here, a 4 x 8 sheet of drywall cost about $7, which wwould make the drywall cost about $450.

I think it would be feasible for you to tear down the old ceiling and hang the new drywall (with a buddy for help - it's nearly impossible to hang drywall on the ceiling alone). But then I would find sombody to do the finishing for you (all the taping and mudding). It takes quite a bit of experience to learn how to finish drywall even somewhat decently, so you would be better off hiring somebody to do the finishing. If you ask around, you can probably find somebody willing to do it under the table, which would save you lots of money.

That all depends on the material you're using, if the framing is still good, etc. Go to the store where you're going to get your supplies with your blueprints / floor plans. They'll be able to give you a free estimate.

As for doing it yourself, a ceiling could be a rough project to start out on. Walls are a lot easier, you have something to balance the material on.
