How do you decide which wall to paint when choosing an accent wall?

Question:And how do you decide where to stop with one color and start with another? How much color is too much color? Should you paint a small wall or a large wall? Can anyone help me? If left to my own decisions...I may be in trouble.

Answers:
The accent wall is intended to draw the eye and is usually near the room's focal point anyway (e.g., behind the TV, around a fireplace or large bookcase). A good rule of thumb is to go at least two shades darker than your other walls.

Color stops at a natural place - a corner typically. You do not want to try to paint a straight line in the middle of a wall and migrate to another color. Accent colors are also good behind plant shelves and mirrors; you can also do an accent wall that is REFLECTED in a large mirror.

If you go a step further to create a faux finish, these rules still apply. You'll also want to top the faux with a clear, satin or gloss clear coat.

Well I would choose a wall that is a main focus like by the fireplace or another main object in the room. Try to find a natural cut off point like if the wall runs thru the whole living and dining room pick the point where one room ends and the other begins. On Trading Spaces they aways have such good ideas (mostly lol) Maybe you can check out that show or website. GL!
paint whichever wall feels right. paint like 7 layers and get a real groovy effect with dark red.
If there is not an obvious focal wall, choose the one wall that is opposite the doorway or entrance. In a bedroom, place the bed where you see the whole bed when you walk in, and paint the wall behind it, etc.

You should try to stop color when you get to an obvious division, such as a corner. Don't stop in the middle of any wall, even if it continues down a hall or into another room. Walls that are long like that are best left to neutral colors and keep the brighter colors on smaller walls.
Start and stop the color at the end of the wall, in other words, paint the whole wall. When deciding on which wall to paint, consider which wall you want your eye to be drawn to. The eye is automatically drawn to the most dominant color. How much color is personal preference, but remember to spread the accent wall color around the room. For instance, let's say the accent wall is red. Add red around the room: accent color in an area rug, throw pillows, accent pieces on a shelf, art work, etc., so the room feels cohesive. You don't have to use a lot of the chosen color, just in a few places.

Just remember that it's only paint, it's inexpensive, and if you don't like, paint over it. Have fun!
