Are solid wood floors and laminate floors going out of fashion?

Question:my wife wants to lay carpet over our solid white oak floor which cost us £1500 two years ago

Answers:
I don't believe solid wood will ever go out of fashion - it is so gooood! You can put carpets on it, but you don't need to. It's warm to bare foot and relatively easy to clean... Good isolator too.
But putting a nice carpet (like a persian piece) can make the home warmer and quieter. Carpets absorb noise...and dust as well!

Sad! It's so new and she already wants to put carpet over it?

I would counter her request--that's SO pricey AND the floors are so new. If she wants, buy some rugs to make it softer. BUT she should enjoy those hardwoods, not cover it up!
I still like wooden floors as they are easy to keep clean, some people don't as they think they feel cold. As far as I know they are still in fashion but people have carpets too, usually plain and neutral in colour.
Maybe she just wants a change, or finds wood noisy/cold or whatever. The wood floor will still be there to uncover whenever you want to in the future. If it's solid wood that's great. I hate laminate flooring and would never have it in my house. That might go out of fashion, solid wood, never.
yes people are now realising ..that it is not a functional covering .next will be the fad of wooden slatted blinds...(so much dust..)
I am crying! In the US they are more popular in ever. In my current house we ripped up the horrible carpet and found gorgeous oak flooring from the 40's.

If she wants the textural feel of carpet, get a beautiful rug.not carpeting and take her out to dinner with the savings.
I think you need to review your marriage commitments. If she wants to change something so expensive that you both decided on, perhaps this is an indication of something else wrong. Take her on a great holiday and see how you go from there. I suggest Grenada.
I have a solid wood parquet flooring covered by a cream carpet. The flooring is beautiful but I'm a cold person and I need the carpets to keep my house warmer. Anyway a house looks more homely with a carpet!
Tell her no. You'll ruin the hardwood by attaching the carpet, and your 1500 pounds will be lost!

Can she perhaps accept area rugs, which don't have to be attached?

And since when do FLOORS have "fashions"?
When we had new fitted carpets two years ago we discovered lovely parquet flooring beneath the old carpet. It was badly covered in paint splashed, but we are about to rip up the fitted carpet and renovate the solid wood floor beneath
Proper wood floors are ok laminate is very naff. Tell her to give it a bloody rest.nag nag nag nag nag bloody nag!
Hardwood floors are definitely not going out of fashion, but are enjoying a resurgence, especially since carpet is a petroleum based product. Area rugs would help soften the area and give it a warmer feel.
