What questions should you ask when choosing an architect?

Question:One has a great reputation, good relationship with our builder and is more expensive, the other - well we just like his house more...

Answers:
What previous projects has he worked on, and how well did it adhere to his planned project time; what is his style/ taste (you don't want an architecht trapped in the 70's etc); Ask him for a couple of references from some past clients (give them a call and ask how happy they were with the architects service, design, personality, flexibility). It's always good if the architect designed his own house and it looks good and is actually living in it himself. Some are so creative (maybe artsie-fartsie is the word ;-) ), that they design weird, abstract, bizarre stuff that isn't practical, and unlivable and a somewhat eyesore.

just ask: "are you an architect?"
if the answer is yes, then you are on the right path
