What's the best method for repainting an old birdbath?
Question:When my grandparents moved from their old house they gave me their birdbath. But now it needs to be repainted badly. It's concrete. Should I sand it first with sandpaper and then spray paint it? I want to spray paint it white like it was before. My husband is threatening to put it in the back yard if I don't get it painted. Please help! Thank you in advance for your suggestions and advice.

I repainted mine, but since it is constantly filled with water, I used Patio Paints for concrete. I simply wire brushed off all of the loose paint and sanded those areas. Then I repainted it and sealed it. I have not had very good luck spray painting any of the concrete statuary I have out in my gardens because for some reason the paint doesn't adhere well or for long. The Patio Paints on the bird bath lasted much longer, I repainted it 5 years ago and it looks like the day I did it. In the mean time, the spray painted items are all peeling and are in need of repainting. I got the patio paints at Michaels craft stores and chose them over concrete paint because there is a much larger selection of colors.
Just scrubb it good with a stiff brush and soapy water.
my first peice of advice is do not actually paint the area which is filled with water because if it is not done right it will be destroyed and could poison animals...plus u never see it its filled with water.in terms of the actual way to paint it scrape it down a bit (just to get any really rought bits off) and then spray it with primer and then outdoor spray paint or roll on some concrete paint. just a little idea is to maybe use it by filling the top with flowers instead of water for a unique look...
