What is the process of reupholstering furniture (e.g. sofas and chairs)?

Question:We own Chinese antique-styled teak furniture finished with green silk. Over the years, the silk has gotten worn in places. Who does one approach for an upholstery job? How much would one expect to pay (ballpark, obviously) for reupholstering a sofa, two chairs, and two ottomans if using silk? Thank you for your time.

Answers:
Unfortunately, reupholstering furniture is very expensive. Check your telephone book for listings, call a furniture store to see if they can recommend someone or even a drapery workroom (someone who custom makes draperies). If they are antiques, you may want to try a reputable antique dealer for a referral.

Silk is very delicate and pricey. It does not hold up well in upholstery pieces.

The labor could vary. If the sofa needs cushion replacement, you would have to factor that in. Ballpark figure $1600.00.

I am assuming your two chairs are fully upholstered since you have two ottomans, so ballpark, $650.00 and $450.00 for the two ottomans. This is one of the reasons that people end up buying new pieces of furniture. These prices might be a little high. I would take some pictures and bring them with you for quotes and if you can, take a cushion to be evaluated.

Good luck.
