I'm looking at putting in the xenon undercabinet lighting and can anyone tell me why such a large price diff?

Xenon is the type of gas used in the globe- xenon globes usually have a life of around 10000 hours- compared to halogen around 2500. Xenon systems are more expensive because of the specialized components- e.g cable, ends, 24V transformer and lamp holders. Try Crompton lighting for a reasonably priced customized system (you buy the components you need, not a set)
You could look at fluorescent strip lighting, small t5 fittings will cost between $30 and $60 each and can be linked so you only need one light point.
Another alternative is halogen under cabinet lighting usually in small triangle or round fittings. They can be recessed or surface mounted and give a nice bright white light. They are generally 12v 20w and start at about $12 per fitting (try CLA great quality and the best prices) a transformer that plugs in and runs 3 fittings will set you back around $10. Because this system is 12v all you need is a power point and you can install them yourself.
I couldn*t even begin to pay any of their prices so I did the next best thing: I went to the dollar store and bought 10 boxes of white Christmas lights and put them under my cabinets hung on cup hooks; No one sees them because they are below eye level but they do the job very well for the prices. you can get 35 on a string or 100. same price . I*ll buy some more at Christmas so I have a stash on hand.
