How can I color rocks for exterior use. should I etch them first using muriatic acid then stain or paint?

There is a concrete stain at Lowe's made by Quikrete that comes in many different colors. That should work. Just make sure your rocks are clean first.

I paint them with a Zinzer oil based coat it is a paint used for covering mildew and harshstains. then I use my regular paints and spray about 4 or more coats of outdoor varnish on...they stay colorful for years in the garden
