Where can I buy a wood varnish like the dark brown color?

Answers:
A hardware store like Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, Do-It Center, or one of the many local & regional hardware & building supply centers that may be in your area.
If you go to one of the national chains, go to the section where the stain and varnish are located. If they don't carry what you're looking for, one of the more experienced employees should be able to tell you of a local store that specializes in the type of item you're looking for.
Varnish is amber in color naturally. When you try to color the varnish it just gets muddy looking. It would be good to stain to the color before varnish. There are different products to get the dark color and one of the best but hard to use is aniline dye. It is thin and cost but can be applied in more than one coat or can be used under an oil stain for a dark rich color and when completely dry a coat of varnish can be applied over the stain. Min-wax makes colored finishes but they are just not a durable finish like varnish.

Your best option for a dark brown stain would be a water based stain - they're safer for the environment, non-flammable, and dry more quickly. To learn more about why water based is a good idea -

I highly recommend award-winning manufacturer - General Finishes. They have beautiful water based stains. Here's a list of their darker colors - walnut, brown mahogany, espresso, and even black. Here's a description of this stain collection:
"Our Water Based Stains have all the advantages of oil base stains: they spread easily, can be repaired, can be blended effortlessly, and have plenty of open time. The thicker formula allows controlled penetration, which will reduce blotching on hard-to-stain woods such as Aspen, Pine and Maple."
