What do i need to know when buying a mattress?

Mattresses are subjective. It has been said that if you have a bad back, you should choose a firm mattress. As we get older, our bodies cannot take too much pressure, so a softer one is better. You want a mattress to support your pressure points and give you proper alignment of your spine. You do not want to have one too soft, as it will be difficult to turn and get out of.
Look at the way the seam is stitched on the edge of the mattress, look at the quilting on the top. The smaller the quilting, the firmer it will be. If you want a more cushiony mattress, choose a larger quilting.
The construction the mattress is made up of a polyurethene foam, memory foam or slab foam with batting. The batting inside should be 1" or less or the mattress will sag.
The frame used by most manufacturer's is used with many of their lines. If you choose a thick mattress, consider going with a lower profile boxspring, 6". The coil in the mattress is the bottom line. The heavier the guage, the firmer the mattress. Maybe, you only need to buy the mattress.
Department stores run sales but can be crowded and you may not get the attention that you require. Sleepy's, 1-800 Mattress and Seaman's are less crowded and can work in a deal.
Lay on the mattress in the store for at least fifteen minutes, 5 minutes on each side and on your stomach or back. Ask what their return policy is if you don't like it. Can you return it in 30 days? And ask if there is a charge for the return or a restocking fee. Note the sales receipt and specify no substitutions on the bottom. Inspect it when it is delivered to see if there are any tears and make sure it is what you ordered. Take your time and watch for sales.
Most mattresses should be reevaluated every ten years as our bodies change.

Most mattresses today are one sided which only require you to rotate them.
Good luck, it is so individual.

how soft it is and the size
What the size, softness, price, and how comfortable you would be on it.
You need to know if you want pillow top or not, what the coil count is (this matters in firmness), does it come with a bed frame, will they take away your old mattress for free, do you need a box spring, what size (twin, queen, king, cal king) How often do they recommend flipping and turning, what is the warranty and how long is it good for, etc. And of course cost.

Good luck!!
