Moving electrical outlets?

Question:I want to ceramic tile my backsplash but how do I move my electrical outlet out so it is not recessed when I put the tile on the wall? It is never mentioned when the steps are given for doing ceramic tile. We sheetrocked our garage and didn't know how to move the electrical outlets so they are now recessed. Any body know??

Some electrical codes require that you use an box extension if the material between the existing box and the surface is combustible. If you are tiling over cement bd or right to the drywall, just use longer screws (#8-32) to mount the outlet so the upper and lower flanges sit on the outside of tile.

If you cut the hole for the outlet in the tile the same size as the electrical box and the screws holding in the outlet are long enough, you should be able to loosen the screws, pull the outlet through the tile as you set it, and then screw the outlet back into the box and the top and bottom flanges of the outlet should rest on the tile making it flush with the tile.
Box extensions very easy to install made of plastic and insert into wall and box you can find them at any local hardware just remember to get 6/32 x 1" screws so you can reinstall the outlet.
