If you have a bunch of unused cabinets, and nothing to put in them, there is an idea that I have always wanted to try. You take the cabinet and hinge off the frame and you can buy a wine rack that fits inside (they hve them at IKEA for like $20). It looks really neat, and you can store your liquor there, even if you're not a big drinker, it looks really neat, and you can just fill a couple of the slots with some cheap wine bottles from Trader Joes or wherever.
Another idea is to also take off the hinge and door and use the area to place decorative items, like a frame, a small vase with flowers, an indoor plant, pretty china, or maybe some coordinating candles. If you don't like the idea of taking off the door, you could also try getting some clear cabinets so you still have the door there, but you can still have decorative items inside.
If you take the doors off, and don't like the edges, you can buy inexpensive molding from home depot to frame the cabinet and it will look great.
I've also seen people paint some of the cabinets in their kitchen and that looks really nice too, but that isn't filling them, just making them pretty. :)
You could always use them for storing whatever you don't have room for anywhere else, like if you don't have a big lining closet, store the items you rarely use, like table cloths, extra curtains, or bedding sets for guests.
Hope this helps.
why do they need to be filled
all the "stuff" my wife had to have..and is still sitting in boxes 3 yrs later after we moved.
This would look best if your cabinet doors are glass or have screens or lace or something else you can see through. If you don't have this, I would recommend doing this on SOME of the cabinets, but have regular opaque doors on the ones you keep your necessities in. (No one wants to stare at your cornflakes every day, trust me!).
Once the doors are taken care of, what I would do is go to a thrift shop or antique shop or different estate or rummage sales and pick up lots of things you really like and want to display. For instance, you could go with themes. You could buy a whole lot of things that are just blue glass. Pitchers, vases, bowls, etc of all different shades of blue. Or you could go with all metal things, like a bunch of silver. Or your theme could be antiques from any era. You could have all rustic things, so have flour sifters, rolling pins, wooden spoons, etc. Or you could do a fifties kitsch theme and have colorful items from that era. Do whatever personally makes you happy and excited to be in your kitchen.
Don't neglect the cabinet hardware. If you have lots of cabinets, they are probably a focal point and having neat cabinet knobs or handles that reinforce your theme would be great and would tie things together.
Have fun!
