Instead of a long answer here may I suggest the link below which Bob Villa explains beadboarding.

Beadboard is a panel of wood that consists of strips of wood usually 1-2 inches wide separated by thin "beads" or strips of wood about 1/4 inch wide.
Well, the beadboard are usually planks roughly four inches in width, with a dual groove down the middle of the plank running the entire length, which if you were to look at a cross section of, you'd see that the dual grooves form a half round surface about 1/4 inch wide.
Wainscoting is a term used for when the lower half of a wall is covered with either panelling, or planks, or beadboard, as a decorative, and sometimes protective touch. Hence, beadboard wainscoting.
A beadboard wainscot is a wall treatment consisting of routered planks or strips called beadboard attached vertically to the lower portion of the wall and normally trimmed with a chair rail on the top edge and baseboard moulding on the bottom edge. It looks great stained or painted. The most durable mounting is with glue because of the thickness of the board, and their tendency toward splitting. Install the board by loosely spacing them on the wall to allow for expansion and contraction. The moulding is nailed to the wall to finish it and to prevent separation.
Beaded wainscoting comes in 3 distinctive bead profiles, the “Standard Bead”, the “V-Bead” and the “V-Groove”. The “V-Bead” and the “V-Groove” are the same bead profiles found on historic wainscot and plank paneling. The “Standard bead” is a custom bead profile that is larger and more pronounced than the v-profiles”.

Each bead profile has its own advantages. The “V-Bead” and the “V-Groove” profiles are authentic scale reproduction of traditional wainscot and plank ceilings. This allows the homeowner to add to existing architectural details while maintaining a consistent visual effect. The “Standard Bead” profile is slightly larger and produces a sharper visual accent even after repeated coats of paint.
It is used to cover walls and other areas with a decorative look. Very Victorian. Good to cover damaged or poorly finished walls
Beadboard wainscoating is a somewhat soft wood with lines running the length of the sheet aproximately 1 1/2" apart that is generally about 1/4" thick and stain grade, meaning you can stain it or paint it any color you like.

you can read detailed information about beadboard wainscoting below:
Elite Beadboard strips are only 5.5" wide making them easy to transport, cut, customize and install. Most installations take place in smaller rooms such as Bathrooms; these rooms offer many different obstacles which can be easily overcome by using a strip style Beadboard. Our Beadboard is made from MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard making it very durable and ideal for High Traffic Areas. MDF is very rigid and will not bow out over time, it is also Water Proof if painted with the proper paints and finished properly.
Beadboard wainscoting is an ornate indoor wall embellishment that serves to decorate the lower portion of a wall. It is widely found in homes with Victorian, English Country, Cottage, Folk and Queen Anne design influences. When it was first introduced, it was mostly used in less formal dwellings such as cottages. Today it is also found in cottages, as well as in vacation homes, foyers, hallways, bathrooms, and other less formal gathering spaces.
