How do you burn down a barn safely?
Question:I was just wondering. I imagine you call the fire department and have them do it but we need it done
Answers:
You will need to contact your local fire department to oversee it and permits etc
If you just burn it down, it's arson
why would you burn it down, why not take it apart and use the wood for something else or recycle it, dont want to sound like a hippy or whatever but that's bad for the environment man, peace!
Gotta agree with Daniel. You could be setting on a small goldmine, depending on the size of the structural members and if it has weathered wood siding. Worse case senario the framing will probably make great firewood (it`s already seasoned)
I`ve seen several old barns that the framing was constructed from walnut.
On the other end of the subject, if and when the structure is removed, don`t forget to notify the county to remove it from your taxes.
I'm agreeing with others that burning might not be your best route. Contact an architectural salvage company. It's even possible they'll pay you to remove you're barn.
You can't do it with complete safety. You are playing with fire. If for some reason burning is your only option ask the fire department to do it then pay them for their time with a donation. By the way, it is arson only if you attempt to collect insurance or burn anothers property. In most jurisdictions permits are required and if the structure contains any hazardous materials (asbestos, shingles, lead paint, etc.) you may be prohibited by statute.
