Primer question?
Question:We're getting ready to paint our first home (interior only), and we're going to need to prime a few rooms first.
With so many primers, how is one to chose? We were going through Home Depot/Lowes and were overwhelmed by the price range ($15-$60/gal) AND selection!!
Any advice?
Answers:
Head to your local home improvement store --preferably on a Saturday morning when the department managers (and thus the most experienced) are almost always required to work-- and throw yourself on the mercy of the pros at the Paint Desk.
It would also help to take some paint chip samples of what you're trying to cover w/ you to assist the advice giver (there are different formulas for covering latex/oil/enamel covered surfaces, etc.)... and note, or take a digital photograph of, any stains, marks, uneven surfaces, etc.
Don't forget to measure each room and provide these numbers to the Paint Desk pro to assist in calculating how much of which formula of primer you'll need.
And, like calculating if the bigger eggs are a better buy, the rule-of-thumb is if there's a $10 or less difference/gallon between Formula A and "upgraded" Formula B, buy Formula B.
Hope this helps,
TX Griff
If the walls have already been painted at least one time, you do not have to prime them.
In new construction homes, it is customary to prime and paint all the walls as a part of the building of the house.
If it is an older home it has most likely been primed years ago and repainted a few times already so again would not need to prime.
You only need to prime bare wood or bare drywall, in which I don't think you guys are dealing with.
Mental D, has some good points, but if you are not dealing with painting over darker colors, stains of any kind or changing from oil to latex, you should not need to prime. Give me more details.
It is only absolutely necessary to prime before painting if you are changing from a gloss type or oil based type to a flat paint. Other than that, just apply 3 coats of paint if your paint is cheaper than primer. Now, if the walls you are painting are a very dark color, a couple of extra bucks for primer might be worth the expense. You get what you pay for with primers. The market standard for most professionals for over 25 years has been KILZ. I have used it hundreds of times. It covers and seals mold, mildew, oil stains such as where some dummy filled the itty bitty nail hole with TOOTHPASTE!( never do this) You can also have the primer tinted at your paint supplier as this will aid in covering over the existing paint more easily.

Skilz one coat sealer/primer. It's about $15 per gallon and really does the trick. There are three or so different types of this stuff, but it all does the job.
If your walls have already been painted, I wouldn't even bother. Most contractors will use cheap flat paint on textured walls which give them the appearance of not being primed, but they really are.
