Decorating ideas?
Question:hi there, we are in the process of doing our stairway a magnolia colour to make it look a lot brighter it is looking lovely at the mo but i want to put some pics or photos up. just wondering if anyone got any ideas (not too costly) of what sort of pics to put up (we like landscape pics and pics where you can look into them and imagine yourself there) is it still modern to put family photos up on the walls in any part of the house or what.

Ikea have some great pictures and prints - they are pretty reasonable in price too.
The other option is to ask your family and closes friends to give you a picture of a place they have been to & loved - each time you look at their pictures, you will share their memories with them in your head. It would be a good talking point for visitors too.

Landscapes are are nice but I think its important not to have too many. A couple of larger ones is better than having a few smaller ones. I don't think family photos ever go out of fashion as people will always love their families and I think they look great in the hallway. I have been saving some photos to do the same thing, I just need some frames! I don't think it matters with family photos how big, small or how many either, they always seem to look great.
I would'nt put the normal picture style on the stairway as with the staircase which is normally narrow when you walk on them you see the wire/nail that is holding the picture.
If you are buying pictures for the stairs get the pictures that is in a frame so the picture sits tight against the wall - looks tidier.
You could consider putting artistic mould can I call them pictures on the wall. It would be different but nice!
I feel you can display family photos where ever you like them i have a hall leading from my kitchen to the bedrooms and Bath on one wall is family photos.
If you like landscapes & vacation scenes posters are cheap and you can buy frames to put them in at wal mart or the Dollar Store. also i think Stenciling a saying above them at the top of the wall going up the stairs is a great idea. Like: Memories are Forever.or Home is where the story begins... just anything you like. also you can take an old window that has 3-6 panes in it and place a scene behind it and hang it on the wall that way it appears you are looking out a window at a scene..you could even put a small valance on top to look like inside..i got one in my kitchen and i love it.
You can use both if you want. Depending on your style of decorating use frames that match your decor. For instance, Pewter or stainless if your decor is more contemporary. Wood if more traditional. You could choose a favorite landscape from a family vacation and put family photos around this. Turn colors into black and whites if contemporary. Just a few ideas.
Family photos never go out of style! One way to assure this is to scan your photos and switch them over to black and white, then have them reprinted at walgreens or someother store that prints digital pictures. It's very inexpensive and you can do it right from home have them delivered or pick them up. Put them in frames (perhaps all black frames, or all natural wood) and then arrange them on your wall. You can also mix in copies of old antique or vintage family photos that are sentimental as well as art!
An easy way to arrange pictures on a wall is to cut out news print in the shapes and sizes of your frames and tack the up on the wall, stand back, do you like what you see? If not switch them around.

Naked pictures
I put family pictures up my stairway as well as some calming outdoor scenes. I like it because it shows me the people in my steps of life. Where it started and where it is today. The mix is pleasant as it gives one time to pause and reflect. You can pick a low cost frame and frame them all the same. Or use a mix and give it more texture. I have a great variety of frames. Some old some modern...I tried to use different frames to enhance the pictures. My great grand parents belonged in old frames. My children in new ones. I find great frames at garage sales and thrift stores. Some really, really unique ones and they are usually very affordable.

Up my stairs I have five pictures of my little girl in black and white, all taken with a few seconds of each where she's blowing a dandelion seedling. They're laid up in order as you climb the stairs. I bought five white wooden 8x10 frames from ebay and I just printed the images out on some glossy photo paper and mounted them as usual. Whole lot cost me about £20.
Everyone always comments how clever it looks.
of course it's still modern to put family pictures up, i have family pictures up my stairs and it's great to think of the memories as you walk past!
This might sound really crazy but here goes. You can get free calendars from many places, i.e-banks, insurance company's, some grocery stores. Most calendars are the larger calendars. Our insurance company gives away calendars of landscapes. They are such beautiful pictures. We took the calendar and cut them to size and put them in a wood frame. We put a border around them(the borders you can find at the store). Of course the border went inside the frame as well. We did this cause this was such a cheap way to decorate with beautiful scenery. May sound tacky but it worked for us and we get compliments on it. Good luck to you.
I think you should take some cute family photos and make them into black and white (you might have a setting on your camera or you can do this at walgreens/walmart). Then print them off and display them ineither black or dark brown frames. Good Luck!
You can use so many different things as decoration on a stair wall. One way I have done it for my clients is taken a pole and mounted it up high and then hung pictures at different levels with cables, ribbons or cord. This has a two fold purpose: 1 keeps you from making holes in the wall and 2 you can change pictures easily no matter what size by moving cables (left right up or down) so you can make an interesting and changeable design.
As far as what to put on the wall mix and match family and landscape. Different sizes and shapes different frames add a mirror and it becomes a self portrait of the person looking in. Find picture in magazines calenders or the many books out there. Remember to work in odd numbers as odd is even in decorating. Frame the pictures differently but keep a theme going in the frames. Too many of the same frame gives it an art gallery look. Have fun!
