I want to buy a REALLY good mattress. Who makes the best?

I'm with your husband, I hate memory foam. I stayed in a hotel not long ago that had a memory foam mattress. Did not sleep well and I am a good sleeper.
I have a five bedroom house and every mattress in the house came from the same source:
Dixie Foam. I bought High Density Carbamate foam in queen, double and twin sizes. I bought extra-firm for the queen and double sizes, firm for the twins. I also bought a pillow top (integrated into the mattress) for the queen.
Pure heaven. Everyone who slept in those beds loved the mattress. This material is not like what most people think of when you say foam. This is not spongy. This is much more like very expensive latex.
These mattresses do not require a box spring. However, if you have a bed that needs a box spring, they can make one for you. That's what I did for the queen. They also make great sofabed mattresses.
They deliver (probably by UPS all over the US).
I have had many different mattresses in my lifetime. This is the best ever. I must also add that these mattresses are not as expensive as the "name" brands although they are not cheap, either. I recall that the queen I bought was around $600. for the mattress alone. Worth every penny every single night. My husband loves this mattress. Maybe yours will, too.

The memory foam is hot as hell when you sleep on it. Try the bed with the sleep number since your husband is a little picky.

Go to a mattress company and try the mattresses. They can run you through the procedure of how to find what is right for you. If you are able get a select comfort bed where you can adjust each side for the suitable firmness for two people, they really work the best. We have a great mattress now but are planning to buy a select comfort. They are also easier to move as they deflate.
We just bought a king size Lady Englander, it's like sleeping on air. It's hot in PA this summer, but all we have is a ceiling fan. It's stil like sleeping on air. We went to the store and tried a few, memory foam, sleep number(didn't like the hard part in the middle). Like the Englander the best. No back ache, no hip pain, and lots of room.

Only YOU can determine which configuration is a "REALLY good mattress" . . it is pretty much a trial and error process. Consider firm talalay latex with a wool fleece pad.
