If you are referring to flooring material, the amount of square footage it covers should be on the box the material is in, you use the same equation of length x width. If you are referring to molding, it's linear feet and you just use your measurements of the room.
It is unusual to calculate square feet to board feet, it is normally square inches.
To calculate board feet the formula is:
Width multiplied by Thickness multiplied by Length divided by 144.
