How long does it take to make an authentic hand-made Oriental rug?
Question:Let's say one about 10'x17'. Where are they made, and how bad are the labor laws broken?
Answers:
Hi Glenn,
Well, it takes a while to hand knot an Oriental rug the size you're speaking of but it also depends on how many people are actually working on it as well. Sometimes it can take 3-4 people over a year to make one carpet!! They are made all over the world, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey...all those countries over there. The people who make them work all day doing it but they can do it without even thinking. They're very talented and dedicated and extremely hard working people and the process is very difficult. There is no way to know what kinds of labor laws that are in place in the countries in which these carpets are made and if they're enforced or not. Our labor laws, I am sure, are much different than their laws, if they even HAVE laws. Anyway, these carpets are expensive and for good reason. The hand-knotted carpets are meant to last for generations and will last for many, many years.
