Painting over stained wood?
Question:We are remodeling and decided to paint over our stained wood. What is the process in doing this. I ask this because when we did the trim in the bathroom we put a coat of primer on first. After 2 coats of paint on top of that the stain slowly bleeds through.
Are we going about this wrong? What is the process in doing this?
Answers:
use an oil based primer ,yes kilz is good ,but I reccomend one called X-I-M, it costs a lot but it will give you the bonding and adhesion you need to lock in the stain and varnish so it will not bleed through, then use an oil based enamel for the topcoat, I reccomend Benjamin Moore satin Impervo.good luck.painting contractor

The best thing to do would be to sand out the trim first with a medium, fine, and then extra fine sand paper. Sanding would remove the varnish and any dirt. Then prime and paint. Use a good primer like Kilz. The cheaper ones are just that...CHEAP. Otherwise you could use a wood stripper, but this is a lot more time consuming and even a bigger mess.
Kilz or Coverstain oil base primer are your best products for this situation, sometimes you have to prime it twice. Let it dry completely before putting on your finish coat, if this continues then your finish coat should be oil also.
