Is it better to put lucky bamboo in water or soil?

Question:

Answers:
I'm not sure which is better because I've left it in water and I've planted it. If you plant it, either put it in a container or limit it's root growth because it is extremely invasive and you will have a forest of it when planted in the ground before you know it. I haven't had too much luck growing it in water, however. They usually start to turn yellow after about 2 years and they die. My neighbor who bought hers at the same time I did grows hers in water and it is a tree now. She keeps putting it in larger containers as it grows. She says the reason mine died is because I used regular tap water and she only uses distilled water. Overall, the ones I planted are still growing and alive whereas the ones in water croaked.

water.
I had lucky bamboo before in soil, and I'm not sure what happened, but a fungus started to grow around the roots. I now have three and they are just planted in pebbles. I use distilled water, per the instructions that came with them. They've been healthy for about 2 years now, but haven't grown too much.
Water. My grandma has one that has kept for 3 years in water.
