Is it better to add an extra bedroom or have an small open plan living room and kitchen?

Question:I currently have a one bedroom flat with a weird layout. I am not sure whether to leave the current bedroom as it is and change the current living room to a second bedroom. The problem with doing this is that the kitchen /living room would be quite small.

The other option is to leave the current living room and bedroom as it is and put in a box bedroom. The kitchen would still be a good size.

Please help, my girlfriend and I can not agree on which is the best option.

I would use a room divider to delineate the bedroom area. This would allow you some privacy without the space looking cut up. You can also nail up some vertical moulding on the walls where the different "rooms" would be, and paint these "rooms" different colors, to give the feel of a compartmentalized space while allowing for the open plan. Let your furniture groupings dictate the use of each "room" and it'll seem more spacious.
