Is standing on your roof safe?

Question:im not talking about falling off but can the roof cave in? i have a ledge about 5 feet outside of my window and i want to go on it, is there any chance it could cave in?

Answers:
Your roof should not cave in if it is in otherwise good condition. Someone had to get up there to put it up, right? A roof system is usually designed to withstand fairly significant intermittent loads to absorb the force of wind blowing against it. A person walking around should be well within the limits.

It is possible that you will damage the surface of the roof and make it wear out sooner. Shingles do not tolerate much walking about. Once or twice will not hurt anything but I would not make it a regular lounging place. Other roofing materials will have similar problems.

Also, there are a few types of roofing that will not support much weight. One thing that comes to mind is translucent fiberglass roofing sheets, they will not take any weight directly and you would need to be careful to step in places that has proper support. There are probably other materials that have similar problems, that is the only one that comes to mind right now.

i think there's a chance but it doesn''t happen a lot
i.ve been roofing for over 20 yrs.and i.ve not fallen through yet.be careful on any roof the can be slippery because of the granules, and the stepness of a roof.
