Interior Painting? How much?
Question:Hi, I'm a university student and our crew does painting jobs over the summer. We are amateurs but we provide quality painting.
We just did a an interior job yesterday which took 3 people, 13 hours each to complete (39 man hours). This job should have only taken us 9-10 hours each (27-30 man hours) with no breaks but due to some circumstances, took us longer. We work at average speed. I don't know the measurements of the walls since I'm not the boss. Also, the walls were being painted for the first time so it absorbs the paint quite a bit. The owner also provided us with the paint (3 gallons, which was the perfect amount). How much should this have cost? We only charged $355 CDN... so about $300-$310 US. Did we charge too little?
Answers:
3 gallons at 350sq ft per gallon equals1050 sq ft
310 us divided by 1050 equals $.29 a square ft. I usually get $.32 us a wall square ft. a little more if theirs a lot of furniture to move
You charged plenty, because you are not at this you can only charge that amount. I used to work for a paint store. Just because it took you that long doesn't mean you didn't charge enough just because you guys are amateurs.
$355 pay /39 man hours=$9.10 pay per man hour
Did you provide the brushesand tarps, etc? are they going to be reused? deduct the expenses off whet you get paid. so if you spend $50 on supplies you made $7.82 per hour.
Are you happy with this rate of pay? then there is your answer.
This sounds about right. If we take the $300 and divide it by 30 hours we come up with $10 per hour. You can't really charge the person you are contracting for extra due to circumstances unless he is responsible for them.
