Does anyone know UBC for fireplaces? I need to know how much tile to put in front of the fireplace.?
Question:I removed some dark, ugly tile from in front of the fireplace which had been there so long it disintigrated when removed. I need to know if I need to replace it and if so, how far out should I tile? The floor under the tile is hardwood.
Answers:
24" inches is minimum UBC unless you have fixed glass doors or an insert then only 18" are required.
Hello, Cracked or broken tiles in a hearth or fire surround should be replaced with new ones, but this may not always be possible. If alot of the tiles are damaged or crazed, your best option may be to re tile the whole hearth or surround. This is not as difficult as it sounds, because you can simply stick the new tiles on top of the old ones.First make sure all of your old tiles are clean as possible and free from dirt and dust, and all loose pieces removed. Than just apply your adhesive and put the tiles on in the ordinary way. You can also mix new with the old to give it a patterned look. If it's really close to the fire itself, use you can use some fire adhesive,if not, a mixture of coarse sawdust mixed with wood glue will do just fine. Doesn't sound like it ,but that glue mixture is very strong and works out very well. Good luck ,Bye
You will need to replace the tile the 24 inches. Go to Lowes or Home Depot or somewhere like that. They can guide you through the process. Pick a tile that will compliment your floor .
