Re-Painting previously painted wood paneling..?
Question:We recently moved into my parents home after they both passed away. They had previously had someone paint the wood paneling in the living room but this person DID NOT prime the walls before they painted them. The paint will come off if it is just barely scratched!! I want to repaint the walls..how do I go about removing the previous paint...to where I can properly prime and then paint the walls?
Thanks..

Removing the paint is not going to be easy, I'll have to get paint remover and it will be messy, after paint is removed you'll needed to sand walls, prime and paint. I would remove one piece of the paneling and check the shape of the walls, more likely they will be easyer to fix then the paneling. In the 60's paneling was in and everyone installed it, it was the look, in the 80's it was time to paint it, its to dark, Now it time to go back to the 40's or 50's, take down the paneling and paint or wallpaper. Good luck. It's a lot of work but you be happy with the finished look.
Use 100 grit sandpaper on a pole sander and just knock off what you can, you say it comes off real easy so I wouldn't worry about removing all the paint, think about it wouldn't it be easier to just slap a cheap paneling over your existing one, think of of the mess you'll have stripping it .Once you've cut through the existing paint film by sanding you'll then apply Zinseer "COVER STAIN" it's an oil based primer/sealer (maker of "Bins") and will stick to your surface, caulk all lines that show up black (where 4x4 sheets meet) and along the ceiling and top coat with a nice acrylic eggshell finish. Good luck Les the painter, paint takes up to 2 wks to a month to cure so don't be scratching it
