Ho much fabric do I need?
Question:I have a large picture window that I want to buy fabric to make curtains for and I need to now about how much fabric in yards I will need. I am not using a pattern or I would know this already. I need to make 2 panels each being 48in wide by 85in tall.

If you are just doing a sold color, look for either a 54" or 60" width fabric.
You will need anywhere from 2.5 yard to 3 yard for each panel depending on your hem and your curtain rod.

Do it the easy way and buy sheets. The end with the wide hem can be opened up and slipped on a curtain rod. They can be easily hemmed.
Measure your windows and go to any fabric store or Wal Mart; They will tell you how much you need.
Normally, when making curtains you should double the width measurement. 48 inches wide, you should purchase 96 inches for each panel. For the length you need to adjust for the hem, roughly 3 to 4 inches. The top will depend on the rod type and width and how high above the window it will be positioned.
For two 48" wide panels, you would need to buy twice the length you need (85") plus the addl fabric for the hem at top & bottom. Say if your hems were 4" top & bottom, you would need 85"+85"+8"+8". This comes to 186" divided by 36" to get the yardage reqd. This comes to about 5 1/4 yds, assuming it's a solid fabric 54-60" wide. (best to buy little more). If the fabric has a pattern, you need to allow for the pattern repeat & you will need more. The online store should have a contact where you can ask for their help.
