Why is it called 'stainless steel'?

Question:I mean, u can still get finger prints on it. you can draw on it with crayons. So why call it that?

Answers:
You are correct stainless isn't a wonder product. Actually it depends what kind of stainless steel you are talking about as there are indeed different grades such as 304 (18-8), 316 etc. It is NOT TRUE to say that stainless doesn't rust. I just went to a company's website that sells stainless steel sheet metal and it says 410, 416, 420 and 440C have poor resistance to corrosion.

The different kinds of stainless have varying degrees of chromium, nickel and molybdenum etc. which affect the corrosion resistance, weldability, strength etc for each grade.

Some stainless steels are considered ferritic, martenistic, nitronic and some austenitic it gets kind of crazy.

304 stainless which is the same as 18-8 since it has basically 18% chromium and 8% nickel content is commonly used in the food industry this is probably the material you are talking about. 316 for example has molybdenum added for additional corrosion resistance but is typically not considered to be as strong as 304 so it has its drawbacks.

It doesn't rust - or rather it takes much more extreme conditions to make it rust. And it doesn't get stains from food when you eat using cutlery made from it.
doesnt rust!
It means it won't rust like mild steel and other types of steel and iron it has a small amount of chromium in it and is good for when you don't want things to rust out doors like your bbq and some garden tools.
