How do you smooth a textured wall?

Question:My husband and I just bought our first housr and Our living room walls are some type of texture that looks to be done with plaster and I want them to be smooth. How would be go about doing this? Is it a hard job and is it expensive?

Answers:
IF IT IS PLASTER, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO SAND THEM. VERY VERY TIME CONSUMING. IF WOULD PROBABLY BE EASIER TO PUT UP NEW DRY WALL AND PAINT. IF IT'S A SMALLER AREA YOU MAY BE ABLE TO SAND AND OR REPLASTER THE AREA SMOOTH.

Sanding. Dusty, messy, and it takes a lot of time to get them smooth. Good luck --- you will need it!
depending on the age of the house it is either plaster(see previous answers) or spackle. On an inconspicuous place scrape off the peaks to break the paint bond. Then soak the area with water from a spray bottle, wait a few minutes then scrape with a 6 inch spackle knife. If it is spackle it should scrape fairly easily down to the Sheetrock surface.
My last house had paint created texture. We were able to wet it down and scrape it, then sand it really well before re-painting. Good luck, it's not an easy task!
