Answers:
Years of irresponsible logging practices have depleted the redwood and cedar forests significantly. Environmental groups are not happy and make this known to publicly traded companies (those with public shareholders).
Forestry practices have improved vastly over the last few decades, trees are removed in a much more responsible manner. Many environmentalists disagree and would prefer that no redwood or cedar is sold. Large companies find that it is easier not to stock these products than deal with the repercussions from the environmental groups.
Both redwood and cedar are still available for a price and with some limitations. The quality is not what it was years ago. You will have better luck finding it at smaller, family owned lumber yards.
