try a yellow pages for your local area.

Give your local a council and Trading Standards a call. They should both have a list of reputable and trusted builders in your local area. If you rely on the yellow pages, you never know what you are going to get.
If you know any retired builder, ask them to have a look at your roof. They won't do the job but the information they give you will be invaluable when you ask a builder for a estimate.

Basically, anyone that comes via recommendation.
I do some building work, normally about 3 houses year, amongst my other 3 full time jobs !. All the builders i use are NOT in the yellow pages. Why would they ? Good builders are definately hard to find thats why you need to go with reputation and recommendation. also, they are more likely to talk to you if you can mention "xyz said you were good..."
Might help if you say where you are, you never know, you could be in my village and i would have just the right phone number for you !
Check the FMB web site. This is the Federation of Master Builders. This is the only gauranteed way of finding good quality tradesmen in your area. Good Luck.
The only sure fired way of getting a good builder is to ask friends, relatives, neighbours for recommendations. Or, find local builders in the directory or advertising in paper, and ask them for names of past clients you could contact to find out if they were satisfied.
