It is not easy, but it can be done. You can choose a one-story house with the same number of bedrooms as your present home, but with 1/2 to 2/3 of the square footage of your present home.
A lot of things will need to be given away or sold during garage or yard sales. Or stored in a storage place.
I know it is difficult but it can be done. We moved from a six bedroom 6000 sq ft home down to a 3000 sq ft home with 4 bedrooms, and finally down to a 1800 sqft home with 2 bedrooms. I think we have downsized enough.
Contact a realtor/look in the classifieds. Go to craigslist.org for your city. Have a garage sale, etc.
Why on earth would you want to make your house smaller when you have children? That just doesn't make sense
