I like asphalt shingles for the following reasons:
1. They re cheap to buy and install.
2. They are easy to repair or cut into-lets say you want to add a skylite or build an addition, or a tree falls on your house.
3. They are durable.
4. They work on any pitch down to a 2:12.
5. They are available in many colors.
Stay away from proprietary roofing products like metal shingles, etc. They are expensive and very difficult to match if repairs are needed.
The best type are those that never need replacing. The longer the warranty, the better they are.
You can always go with a tile roof, or one of these that is also fire proof
