Can i add a bathroom without a permit in new york state?
Question:
Answers:
YES you need a permit to build a bathroom in NY-
There are code issues involving the plumbing, electrical and ventilation of them-even if you do the work yourself.
For most improvements, other than cosmetic that cost over a certain amount($500 where I live)The municipality will require a permit as your assessment will go up as will your taxes.
Most localities require plumbing and electrical work to be done by a licensed "professional"-that is because an out of work brother-in-law can cause damage if these are not properly done.Thats the main reason for a permit,to insure an inspection
do you exaclty what you are doing every step of the way? That is why you need a permit and a good contractor.
Hi, Yes you can add a bathroom in any state as long as it is being installed in an existing area of the house. If you have to expand your home in any way , (meaning if you have to break through an exterior wall. ) Then you will need a permit. Just make sure that the bath addition will have a drain line that will fall above the lowest drain that is currently in the house.or you will have some serious problem,s with drainage, :)
I sure don't work in the same states as Tom M does. I could lose my builder's license for that here in MA. You should probably check with your state. Hint: call a building dept in another city or town so you can get info without any biases. Most states would require a building permit and a plumbing inspection as well as electrical if it was not up to code, for example, Ground fault outlets in bathrooms are now code in every state and can save your life or your children's if a hairdyer, for example, gets dropped in a tub. It doesn't have to be like the movies where you fry for minutes as ground fault outlets trip in 1/10 of a second under full load.
If you are just updating tile and painting and replacing toilet where no actual plumbing is being touched, you as the homeowner could get away with no permit.
As far as selling the house goes, the two are generally unrelated and wouldn't be a problem.
No,you need a Permit and a Licensed Plumber .Or you can try it yourself.if you have a Plumbing ,Electrical License
