Answers:
"Sugar soap" plus elbow grease plus fresh paint.
"Sugar soap" is what professionals use before they decorate. It's a powdered detergent. Add to a bucket of hot water, and it washes just about anything off walls prior to painting. I can't believe it's a UK-only product...
you need lots of friends, probably a steam cleaner, if the walls are papered then a wallpaper stripper and lots and lots of warm water with maybe stardrops or bleach in and dozens of rags and a bucketload of energy.
Sugar soap is a product that most DIY stores have, it is used to clean up paint work before painting. This can be used to remove smoke damage but is a long hard process.
Why not purchase cheap white emulation paint and simple paint over it several times to cover the smoke up. Once the paint has dried you will have a clean base to work from.
before you do anything , ring your insurance company they will tell you if you are cover includes decoration wallpaper etc, if no joy go to your local diy and they will tell you what to do. good luck silver fox.
Wash off with sugar soap, then use a white oil-based undercoat to seal. Look on the side of the tin...if it says 'clean brushes in turps/white spirit' then its oil based. Be aware that soot may contain sulphurous deposits, add water, and you have sulphuric acid, very weak.but, if you leave any after washing it will eat through your fresh paint.
Sugar Soap is nasty stuff, wear gloves/ goggles, have a wet vac handy. Why not get some beer in, invite lots of friends, have a scrubbing party??
You can clean all you want and not get rid of the smell.Tear off all wall coverings, replace insulation, and start with new.
so sorry to hear that.
i know how you feel ,we just had a fire in november.

you need to wash evrything down with a de greaser first then you need to stainblock everything (we use a product called zinzzer primer sealer) it is not cheap though but it is very good but any oil based paint will stop stains you will probably need 2 coats to seal it you will need to replace all your insulation you can also get a deoderising spray we do a lot of insurance work and this is how we do it
sorry to hear of your misfortune
