Making doorway arches?
Question:How would I make the upper corners of a doorway "Arched"
I want a rounded, archway instead of the squared-off doorway. Any suggestions..??
Answers:
Decide the radius that you want the arc. Then get a sick of wood a little longer than the radius and drive a nail at the radius lenth from the end of the stick. Drive the nail into a piece of plywood. Now hold a pencil on the end of the stick and mark out the ark. Cut it out with a sabre saw. This is your template. Use the template to trace the pieces you need to frame the arch.
use sheet rock and make a fitted arc to make the corners into an arch. it would have to be made enclosed on all 3 sides and fitted into the corner then tape and smooth the seams.
apply paint or wallpaper to finish off the look.

block the corners with 2x4s for 45 degree corner, then cover with a strip of 1/2" plywood (for a solid base for the sheetrock). then block to fill in the gaps behind the plywood. you probably should make a template, (out of a 4x8 sheet of plywood) if you are doing more than one door, so they all turn out the same. if the walls are open to the framing, you might want to raise the top of the doorway a bit (the header), since you will end up narrowing the head room quite a bit. i've seen some homes with just rounded top corners, (not true arches), since the door opening size would be cut in half for head room. hope this helps, good luck.
Check the Home Centers. They now make a metal piece that has cuts along the edges so it can be bent to conform to curves and arches. It is the width of a standard 2x4 wall. Lay out the curve you desire and cut it out. Install the metal piece and then use joint compound.
