Can you (a plasterer) plaster over old wallpaper or does the paper have to come off?

Question:I am looking at an old renovation project to sell on so want to minimalise time and labour and want to know if it is possible to plaster over the ancient old textured wallpaper that will be such a nightmare to get off? Thanks, Martin. (any plasterers in the Epsom, Surrey area feel free to quote!)

Answers:
I think it would be easier to strip the paper off. Plastering takes ages.

problem is the weight of the plaster can bring the paper off the wall and the new plaster comes with it.
A steam stripper would do the job quite quickly

.
Plaster over it and it will not only take longer. It will come off.
No the weight of the plaster will make the paper unstable and it will be lousy finish.

Unlucky with the wall paper, its a horrilbe job, have you tried steaming it off
well its better to remove but you can plaster over anything just rub the surface up a bit as it bonds to any porous surface
You absulutely must remove the paper. If you don't know how to plaster, though, do get some guidance first, or you will regret it!!
you could skim over it but the wall paper will suck all the moisture out of the plaster to quick
better to strip it off then uni-bond and skim.
Spray the wallpaper with water and ...fabric softener...About a quarter cup to a gallon of water. Let it soak in for about 5 minutes then spray it again right before you start scraping/peeling. If its "vinyl" paper hit it with a paper tiger (from a paint and wallpaper store). Once the paper's wet, it usually, will peel right off. It's not a huge deal and, yes the paper has to come off. (And may the wall gods be with you if some idiot has painted the paper)
Simple answer no. Use a steam stripper to remove the wallcovering.
ACTUALLY..OLD WALLPAPER ISNT THAT HARD TO TAKE OFF AND VERY EASY IN FACT..TAKE A SPRAY BOTTLE AND SQUIRT WATTER ON IT..I USED WARM WATER..GET IT VERY WET..THEN A PUTTY KNIFE AND IT USUALLY PEELS FASTER N BETTER THAN A ORANGE.BUT YES U CNA PLASTER OVER THE OLD WALL PAPER..DONE THIS TOO..BUT IF YOU DO THAT..THE PLASTER WILL LOOSEN THE PAPER AND WELL IT WONT BE VERY SECURE ON THE WALLS..IF YOU GET MY DRIFT...
No definately not, you will end up with a horrible mess, pay a younger member of your family to strip it all off
No decent plasterer would plaster over wall paper. I suggest that you take it off.
If any plaster suggests plastering over old wallpaper they are not a professional plasterer and are to be avoided at all costs.

Do not attempt it.
Thinking of taking the lazy out, are we?? Remove the paper first it will save you a lot of hassle in the end.
No, it's not possible. The moisture from the plaster will harm the bond that the wallpaper has with the wall underneath.

Rent a steamer, score the wallpaper, and remove the paper. It shouldn't take you longer than a day if you work quickly.

Also, if there is a problem soon after you sell because you attempt to plaster over the wallpaper you will be responsible for repairs.
I would suggest to strip the wall paper off first. It will look shoddy if you dont.
