Help with painting cedar chest please.?
Question:I got a chest at a garage sale. I want it black to go with my other furnitue. So far, hopefully this was right, I sanded it lightly just to give it some grip, wiped all down, primed it, and put a acrylic latex enamel. So now it is a shade of gray. It looks like I used water paints on it with the white from the primer coming thru. What do I do now to get it solid black? Thank you
Answers:
Is it possible that you just need 2 or 3 more coats of black? I am assumming that the acrylic latex enamel was black.
I suggest using a orange type stripper and starting over. Sand to bare wood and stain the wood with an ebony color and thin a coat of black then for the final coat roll the oil on the chest one surface at a time and use the brush to smooth the finish out.(I call this tipping it off) Do all the outside when dry Open the lid and paint the edges and wipe off the outside to keep the edge crisp. Do not get any paint on the inside. Sand the inside to open the fragrant scent of the cedar.
I know oil is not easy but the latex will never look real smooth.
