I would suggest taking a look at bamboo floors. Its becomming more popular due to it's durability, strength and beauty. Not to mention it's resonable on the wallet. You can get it in nearly any finish (dark, light, colored, etc) and its has a lovely grain to it.

If you can find some, then "tallow wood" works very well, otherwise any other hardwood you can manage to find will be great. Have fun !!
We put wood laminate in our basement. Very easy to take care of and it looks great.
If there is a vapor barrier in your basement floor, you could probably use any type of wood that you want. If not , I recommend a wood that is actually meant for decks called EPEE (spelling?). They talk about it often on THIS OLD HOUSE. It is a hardwood from South America that is farmed, sustainable, and so dense you have to pre-drill the nail holes. Depending on your type of application you could even glue it down.
Good luck.

I'm not sure that I'd ever use wood in a basement. I'd use laminate or better yet tile. Almost all basements will end up with some water in them at some point.
