Inexpensive decor help.?
Question:I need desperate help with my livingroom. I'm pretty much broke, but I cannot stand to look at my livingroom anymore. I have a very small apartment. Right now I have a swivel rocker (awful brown color) a roll top desk, a dresser and a huge book case overflowing with books. That's it for furniture. I have dark blue carpets and wht/gry walls. One window. My living room and TINY kitchen are only seperated by a half counter. I rent so I cannot paint or do anything too perm. I'd kind of like to not have to buy any furniture, so I was thinking about finding some creative seating ideas. Plus, I just need some really creative ideas to decorate and make it home-like without having to spend much money at all. I mean reeeeeeeeeally really cheap here, people:)
Answers:
The most inexpensive way to decorate is to make do with what you have, just change the look with paint and fabrics. You can take some cheap fabric and a poster frame, stretch the fabric over the frames insert and replace the frame for a bold dramatic change. Find matching fabrics and make throw pillows to match. Use the new krylon spray paints and make your rocker a less awful shade, to match. Find a couple chairs, they don't have to match, at a thrift store or rescue mission and paint them to match your swivel rocker. Make the place reflect you with the colors that you like.
You can go to thrift stores and find all kinds of stuff cheap. You can find a throw or quilt, blanket etc.. and throw it over your rocker. I would pick a light color that has some blue in it to match the carpet. You can paint the book case and desk also. If you can find a chest, or something similiar to that, you can put alot of your books in that and also use it as a coffee table or end table. The less clutter you have the bigger your place will be. Also if you find some nice accessories at thrift shops you can paint them and also use your imagination. Just because something was made for something specific doesn't mean you have to use it for that.
dear hmacca;
i am in the home decor industry and would love to help you redecorate, and doing it on a budget is truly the most rewarding and most fun. first, have you checked a thrift store for a loveseat or a pair of chairs?, using a slipcover on those would be great. if you don't sew, they can be done with other things if you want to make them. the best covers to make would be out of painters dropcloths, they are inexpensive and can be dyed to match any color palette. sheets can make great window treatments, and art or photos can be hung on a length of wire across the whole wall, or matting some photos in matching colors. what style do u think your wood pieces are?, what do they look like? have you considered painting them to bring unity to the room? also, with your carpet color, shades of gray would work w/ both the floor and walls. also, pick an accent color such as burgandy, or perhaps mocha, as either works well w/ the blue. please feel free to email me at roomredesigns@yahoo.com, as i have set this up to allow emails from this sight, i think! also, i would like some more info on the finishes of your wood, if your carpet is more navy, and countertop color. you can let your colors flow to the kitchen, thereby visually enlarging the space. also, mirrors do wonders for making small spaces bigger. are u allowed to hang anything on the walls? stainless steel or like hardware for your desk and dresser would be perfect, using the same style for both pcs. also, consider using toss pillows for spots of color. let's correspond and get this living area designed so that you will love to spend time there!
