Help with something for the floor?

Question:Hi Everyone! Recently I moved into my father's upstairs apartment that hasn't had anyone live here for at least 15 years. I pulled out some old carpeting that looked like it was here since the beginning of time. The floor under is wood however it isn't that nice wood that you hope to find. It is nasty cheap planks. The padding on the carpet has stuck in many places and some of the planks are splintering. I need something to cover this mess that is inexpensive(because I am a college student) and will look halfway decent. Mostly I would love to be able to walk on it with bare feet as it is my bedroom. Thanks in advance.. Char

Answers:
if the floor is splintering and not a actual decent hardwood floor, my advice would be to clear off the old carpet backing, and look into getting some of the new laminate hardwood flooring. you can often find it at discounted prices when somone returns extra from a special order at smaller hardware/supply places. it is a relitivly inexpensive way of making an nice floor, and is simple to install these days.

Why not re-carpet?
Clean the floor, sand the rough spots and paint with a couple of coats of good quality light colored oil based paint. Let dry thoroughly between coats and before moving anything back on it. Throw down a couple of inexpensive "grass" rugs to brighten the place up and you're done!
