Answers:
i have used a thick corded raffia and this is the method I used
fully immerse and soak medium until fairly pliable use a structure to mold the medium while drying local craft & floral shops have styrofoam forms in many sizes making sure to intertwine medium while forming shape and not just layering over top of each existing layerwhen ending wrap end underneath another (branch) several times to secure. Let airdry for several days in a relativly warm and dry area
when thouroughly dry if you want a hollowed effect you will have to carefully pulverise the form material by chipping away through the cracks with and ice pick, metal nail file something to that effect i don't suggest using a knife becuase of potential danger of injuryplace ball on a folded towel perhaps and shake out crumbs until all is removed you can apply a spray on laquer finish or leave natural for a more rustic look
i have also tried using a balloon and filling it with water and placing it in the freezer in a fairly rounded plastic bowl until solid and using that as a form but the shapes were irregular(not exact spherical shape) and it leghthened the drying time about 7 daysbut when i came to removing it all i did was puncture the balloon and fish out the rubber and let dry for a few more days
that sounds like it will take a long time. just buy them
