Although some people like to say that a verandah is just another name for a porch, that's not exactly right.
In fact, a verandah is an open gallery that is covered and has a lean-to sloping roof that is carried (set on) slender columns or posts and is attached to a building. It often runs around the house, in front of windows which affords shelter from the sun and is a very nice external seating area. It is sometimes very decorative (think trellis, carved posts, plants, etc) The verandah became popular in the south, where shelter from the sun was a must.
A verandah is a plus if you are building your home. Not only will you enjoy it yourself, but it will add value and resale value to your home.

Verandas are just another name for a porch. They are long and sometimes wrap around the house. It's what us Southerners call a porch. As for your home, just put a porch of your liking and then call it your "veranda". But you must have a porch swing. Then you can take you a good book and a tall glass of sweet iced tea out to your veranda and enjoy it. Can't you tell I live in the south? Enjoy!
Basically its a porch. However, if built correctly, it should grace the complete frontage of your home. This enabling cars (visitors) to arrive at the house under cover thus avoiding inclement weather conditions. Moreover, in the evening, its very pleasant to sit on the porch, relax, also entertaining your guests, who I'm sure would delight in being able to sit outside under cover in the spring, summer and autumn evenings! I would suggest you take a look at the old plantation houses and similar architect buildings - that will give you some idea's as to how to plan and build it!

A verandah is nothing more than a porch usually open and large. Think of the older large Victorians with their wrap around porches. The largest verandah is on the front of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. If your house can support the design and you like it, then fine. Otherwise it is not necessary.
