How do I paint over abs plastic/laquer-like finish?
Question:I own the blue ROBIN desk and wardrobe from Ikea (see here: http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/stores/se... ) and it looks like a laquer type finish to me-it says abs plastic, which I am assuming is what is the blue covering. I want to paint over this. What is the proper way to do so? Thanks...

ABS plastic is extremely hard to work with. You could try a light sanding of the surface with a 400 grit wet or dry sanding. Do not use a dual action sander, it will bring out the chemical agents in the ABS that will prevent the pain from adhering. Only do a LIGHT sanding, make sure you DO NOT go all the way down to the ABS. If you do happen to make it all the way down to the ABS you will need an adhesion promoter type of primer, DuPont makes one. Then you will be able to apply your paint. I you have further questions I would suggest calling a local body shop or paint shop (automobile or motorcycle) they may have more solutions for you. ABS plastic is the same type used for car bumpers and sometimes saddle bags for bikes.
Your local hardware store should have a non-abrasive cleaning solvent that will allow an acrylic paint to bond to the surface.
The blue layer seems to be a cover of a melamine. It is stuck on the board by glue. In side is MDF? If yes, normally the way to retread is to tear out the old layer, clear the MDF's sufface and stick another new one of melamine. Just for reference.
use a primer first that sticks to laminate ...like Bullseye...apply 1-2 coats...and paint...primer is under $20 at Lowes or Home Depot...dries very quickly...no sanding needed...Did this to my kitchen cabinets.
