It varies so much by size, efficiency, and brand that its hard to give a general answer. Low end is probably 2500 with no duct work for a small split system all the way up to 20,000 or more for the newest, most efficient units. Find the size you need and start there. If you are replacing an existing unit, that's easy enough. If you are retrofitting a house without central air you are already in the 7500 range when you consider running all the ductwork.
I was quoted $6000 (rural northern California) for central heat and air, sufficient to cover 1800 sq foot house.
